Every semester, JMU puts on a convocation concert, commonly reffered to as a "convo show". This semester, University Program Board finally stepped away from rap and went with rock, much to my extreme pleasure. Since it is my last semester, I really wanted to go to the convo show. UPB brought Boys Like Girls and Cute is What We Aim for, a band I had heard of but not listened to. After listening to them, I decided I liked them, and I had already liked Boys Like Girls. So I swiftly contacted Brad and told him of the exciting event, to which he said, sign me up. Soon we had out tickets and were counting down the days til the show. I also informed Cheecho, Gary's girlfriend about the show, knowing she loves Boys Like Girls. They also purchased tickets, so we all met up for dinner before the show.
The show began with Friday Night Boys, whose lead singer is a senior here at JMU. That has got to be such a badass feeling, attending convo shows your first 3 years at college, and then in your final year, you get to perform at a convo show! They were pretty decent for where they were in their careers, but they didn't sound too stand outish. Next up was this "band" called Lights. The lead singer was a chick with a keytar, or as Bret says, "guitboard". There was also a drummer and a synth player. Don't get me wrong, I fully support the guitboard/keytar in organized bands, but a synth dude instead of bass/guitar, I want and expect real instruments from a convo show. Cute is What We Aim For was pretty good live, but many others would disagree. Boys Like Girls was AWESOME!!! They sounded waaaaaaay harder than they do on their album. I hope they finish up this college tour with great haste and swiftly move to the studio for album #2. I loved their cover of the Frou Frou song "Let Go", and "Great Escape" was PHENOMENAL live, just as I expected. Also, the multitude of highschoolers in attendance who were not old enough to vote expressed great delight when encouraged to vote, it was funny. Also, the kids who had to leave because it was past their bed time made me laugh as well. I don't have much more to say about the convo show, other than Caitlin and I had a date at the merch tables, and Brad expressed great disapproval of my use of the word merch, as he does at any show we attend together. That's all I have for now, I think. Until next time.
